Horror Pod Class

Hey class!  Come meet Mike and Tyler, two high school teachers who absolutely love to talk and write about the horror genre!  We also own and write for a website named Signal Horizon, where you can get the latest news, reviews, and analysis of works from the horror and dark science fiction genres!

Feb 24, 2018

On this weeks Episode Tyler and Mike, both with experience teaching High School, discuss the outstanding zombie horror film The Girl With All the Gifts.  The essential question that we try to answer during this podcast is "What does The Girl With All the Gifts have to tell us about modern education?"  Its an interesting dive into a top rate zombie movie that will really make you think.  We discuss a ton of education related topics including how our schools are funded, the school to prison pipeline, standardized testing, and even ROY G. BIV.

1:31- Tyler is drinking a Boulevard Pale Ale, brewed in Kansas City.  Go Royals!  Mike is drinking cheap beer out of a can.

1:40-  We both really, really liked The Ritual.  It is a Netflix original that really appeals to our tastes in horror.  We both thought that the monster was very original and scary, while Tyler liked the aspects of magical realism that the movie worked with.  Our colleague Kati also saw the movie and liked it, you can check out her review here

2:08- Tyler has been listening to the audio book version of Ellen Datlow's Best Horror of the Year, Volume 9.  His favorite story is "Nesters" by Siobhan Carroll.  If you want to check out this book, the best way is to head over to Audible, if you start a trial membership you can get it for free!

2:49- Mike just finished reading the incredible collection of short science fiction short stories by Vandana Singh called Ambiguity Machines and Other Stories.  It is a really smart and intimate collection by an author with a very interesting background both culturally and academically.  You can check out Mike's review of Ambiguity Machines over at Signal Horizon.

4:30-  Mike watched Under The Shadow, a Persian language horror film available on Netflix.  The horror elements are pretty well done and the movie is decently scary, but the real interesting thing about the movie is what it has to say about culture, religion, and gender.

6:43- Creepy Corners of the Net: Mike and Tyler recommend some free horror related content out there on the internet.  This time Tyler recommends the podcast My Neighbors are Dead and Mike recommends Black Cat's Shadow. Both are excellent podcasts about the horror genre and you really should check them out!

8:55- Mike breaks his promise to not mention Betsy DeVos.

38:25- Tyler mentions the school to prison pipeline, which is a concept that multiple factors within urban schools (from disciplinary procedures all the way to physical architecture) funnel students straight from one institution to the next.  If you want to know more about the school to prison pipeline check out these two awesome articles.  The first is from Tolerance.org, it gives a great overview of the topic and possible steps educators can take to lessen it.  The other from NPR has a pretty outstanding infographic that we encourage you to share with others who might be interested.

42:00-  Here are two excellent articles about the racial dynamics of both the original novel and the film.  Both are from Mookychick.co.uk.  The first discusses the dynamics of the original novel and the second explores the different, but still important and powerful, themes of the film.

49:00- Tyler recommends that if you are looking for more fiction about teachers, students, and zombies you have to check out This Year's Class Picture by Dan Simmons

What are we doing next week?  Well, we are going to be discussing the horror satire film Red State from Kevin Smith.  We are going to be looking at it from a more social and political lens, so make sure you do your homework!  Your assignment is to watch Red State on Shudder.com.  Not a Shudder member?  You can sign up for free and get a 30 day trial just for being a Horror Podclass student!  Additionally, come prepared by reading all about the Hillbilly Horror Trope.
