Horror Pod Class

Hey class!  Come meet Mike and Tyler, two high school teachers who absolutely love to talk and write about the horror genre!  We also own and write for a website named Signal Horizon, where you can get the latest news, reviews, and analysis of works from the horror and dark science fiction genres!

Mar 9, 2018

Welcome back Class!  Join us as we welcome our special guest and colleague from Signal Horizon, Tracy!  Tracy is our resident TV expert and has been growing quite a following on social media with her in depth analysis of Channel Zero, the Magicians, the Alienist, and other pop culture gems.

Today we are going to be discussing the excellent horror anthology that you can catch on Netflix, XX.  The title XX is of course a reference to the double X chromosomes that differentiate women from those other, lesser creatures that only have a single X chromosome and a weird misshapen Y chromosome.  The segments of XX were directed by Jovanka Vuckovic, Annie Clark, Roxanne Benjamin and Karyn Kusama and it stars Natalie Brown, Melanie Lynskey, Breeda Wool and Christina Kirk.

During the episode we totally forget to mention the creepy yet beautiful framing sequences directed by Sofia Carrillo.  The stop motion animation of a weird walking dollhouse was a really great touch and we feel really bad that we forgot to mention it!

Before we get into the main segment of the show, lets first talk about what we are reading and what we are watching!

2:15- Tracy is reading Winterglass by Benjanun Sridu Angkaew.  From Apex Book Company, Winterglass is a sci-fantasy about one woman’s love for her homeland (Sirapirat) and her determination to defeat the Winter Queen who has overtaken the land.  Tracy really likes it so far and keep following Signal Horizon to see her review soon.

2:45-  Tracy is currently watching the Syfy channel's Channel Zero Season 3: The Butchers block and The Magicians.  You can read more of her ongoing coverage of those two shows over at Signal Horizon where you can find her latest Butcher's Block Episode 5 Recap and Theories as well as her musings about The Magicians Episode 8.

3:45-  Mike is currently reading Cry Your Way Home by Damien Angelica Walters, also printed by Apex Book Company. It is a collection of 15 short stories, all focusing on the themes of love, loss, and sadness as well as resilience. Check back to Signal Horizon later this month for his full review!

4:20-  Mike finished reading Guardian Angels and Other Monsters, a collection of short stories from Robopocalypse author Daniel Wilson.  You can check out his full review where he gives Guardian Angels an enthusiastic two thumbs up

4:40- Tyler and Mike both watched Veronica, which is a great Spanish language horror movie out right now on Netflix.  It is really great to see that non-English markets are still putting out super high quality and scary horror movies.  In fact, there has been a huge amount of internet buzz about it having one of the scariest scenes ever filmed!  Read Tyler's full review of Veronica over at Signal Horizon.

Also, if you are interested in more work from the director of Veronica, Paco Plaza, just head on over to Shudder.com and check out his films REC, REC2, and REC3.  Not a Shudder member?  You can sign up for free and get a 30 day trial just for being a Horror Podclass student!

5:25- Tyler is super excited to attend the First City Film Festival in Leavenworth, Kansas March 22nd through the 25th.  The festival will include film screenings from all around the world in the historic city of Leavenworth Kansas along with scholarships and prizes to be awarded. In the episode, Tyler says that Leavenworth is in Missouri, but he failed geography in school so give him a break.  He is having to do summer school this year to make it up.  In addition to the screenings the festival will include VIP/red carpet events, panels and Q&As with filmmakers.  If you live in the midwest, think about attending and see you there!

6:45-  Creepy Corners of the net.  Every week we highlight some of the places around the net that you can find free horror fiction and horror related content.  This week we discuss the 2018 The Outer Dark Symposium on the Greater Weird, which will be held at the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California.  Head on over to their INDIEGOGO page, learn more about the event, and consider supporting them!  Mike and Tyler have already supported the symposium financially and if you like Weird Fiction as much as we do you should support them too.  The symposium has grown out of the excellent podcast The Outer Dark which offers up some awesome content about the Weird and Bizarro genres.  If you like Weird Fiction we totally recommend you check them out and maybe start with episode 30, which is a roundtable discussion with David Davis, Helen Marshall, Stephen Graham Jones, and Sonya Taafe.

Also, we want to highlight Pseudopod's 4th Annual Artemis Rising, where they highlight brand new works from female and non-binary writers.  Last week's episode was the excellent story "The Drowned Man’s Kiss" by Christine Lucas and narrated by Andrew Leman.

20:00- Tyler mentions that totally awesome horror anthology The Year's Best Horror Volume 9.

36:30-  Vazquez rocks have been used in tons and tons of movies and TV shows.  Check out the full list over at Wikipedia.

40:30- "The Things" is a short story by Peter Watts and was originally printed in Clarkesworld Magazine.  It is the movie The Thing from the Thing's perspective.  It is a really great story and you can read it for free over at Clarkesworld

What are we doing next week?  Well, we are going to be discussing the 2016 film Before I Wake which was recently released on Netflix.  We are going to be looking at how horror films in specific handle dreams.  Make sure you do your homework and watch Before I Wake on Netflix!  Also, you can do us a real solid favor by heading over to iTunes, rating us, and giving us a written review.
